In this series, plein air painter and instructor Jeanne Mackenzie takes a look at new paintings by contemporary artists and points out why they succeed as painted images. This week, Kathy Schifano‘s “Coffee Time, Long Beach Morning.”

Although there are many lines that can be repetitive (which ocean waves tend to be), the artist has given the viewer great entry into the painting. She leads you to the back and then around to the front again. Soft in color variations, there are lovely warms and cools tucked into a landscape supported by strong value changes. It almost has an abstract feel with reference to the division of space.
