In this series, plein air painter and instructor Jeanne Mackenzie takes a look at new paintings by contemporary artists and points out why they succeed as painted images. This week, Jennifer Young’s “Spring Renewal.”

Lead Image: “Spring Renewal,” by Jennifer Young, 2016, oil on panel, 9 x 12 in.

I enjoyed the artist’s interpretation of form as she modeled the spring boughs. There is definitely a dark, middle, and light that bring the branches out toward you. The shadows under the trees have a vibrant color, hinting that this was actually painted onsite. The path gives you a hint of the distant terrain as it leads you to the river/bay beyond.
