The Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational concluded recently, naming a passel of winners and showcasing a solid selection of paintings. Who won in one of California’s most beautiful spots?
The nine-day event benefits the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. It was judged by Jean Stern.

Best in Show, worth $10,000, went to Ray Roberts for his painting “Morning on Main Beach.” Artists’ Choice was won by Andy Evansen. The PleinAir Magazine Award went to Cindy Baron for her piece “6 O’Clock Pacific Time,” while Colin Page won the award — and the Artist Palette Award — with “Crystal Cove.” The Fine Art Connoisseur Award went to Mark Boedges for “Main Beach.”

Jesse Powell won the Irvine Museum Award for “The Late Show,” a captivating nocturne. The Dr. Edward H. Boseker Award winner was Brenda Boylan, for “Intersection on 1st.” Jim McVicker won the Laguna Canyon Foundation Award for “Big Bend,” while John Cosby nabbed the Revelite Award with “Silverado Ranchland.” The Spirit of Laguna Award went to Hiu Lai Chong for her casual portrait of a surfer, “Waiting for Wave.”

“Meditation,” by April Raber, won an Award of Excellence. “Installing Piers for a New Dock” by Aimee Erickson won the Strada Award. Suzie Greer Baker won a Distinctive Merit Award for “A Day at the Beach,” and Rita Pacheco’s “Laguna Theater” won the Architectural Award. Michael Obermeyer won the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Mary Linda and Jay Strotkamp won Lifetime Members awards. Mark Boedges won the Quick Draw award, and Jeff Sewell won the Collectors Choice award. The Randy Higbee Gallery Award was shared by Paul Kratter, James McGrew, and Jeff Sewell.
