Each summer, over the Fourth of July weekend, the Sheridan Arts Foundation hosts 20–25 nationally renowned plein air artists to paint the stunning natural landscape and charming historic architecture of Telluride, Colorado. The Telluride Plein Air Festival has become an indispensable part of Telluride’s Independence Day festivities, allowing locals and tourists alike to observe some of the nation’s top plein air artists at work. The festival culminates in a three-day sale right in the center of the historic downtown. The festival is a fundraiser for the Sheridan Arts Foundation, the nonprofit that owns and operates the historic Sheridan Opera House.

Fifth annual plein air event in vintage, picturesque Georgetown, Colorado, 45 minutes west of Denver at 8,500-ft. elevation, part of the Georgetown-Silver Plume National Landmark Historic District. A charming town of colorful Victorian buildings ringed by mountain views, Georgetown has long been a favorite of artists. Includes Quick Draw in historic downtown. Exhibit and sale through Sunday, August 14. Registration and exhibition at Georgetown Heritage Center, restored 1874 schoolhouse, 809 Taos Street. Frederick Law Olmsted (FLO), the “Father” of modern American landscape architecture and designer of the grounds of Biltmore Estate, the U.S. Capitol Grounds, Central Park, the Buffalo Parks System, the Louisville Parks System, Riverside in Chicago, Druid Hills in Atlanta and many more iconic landscapes. FLO painted his landscapes with trees, shrubs, rolling hills, streams and ponds. His design vision provided all people with simple pleasures of nature. The Olmsted 200 Celebration brings 52 Olmsted Plein Air Invitational Alumni to document Olmsted landscapes across the country.

The 18th annual Plein Air Easton competition and festival, sponsored by the Avalon Foundation, juries in 58 artists every year. In this event on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, artists will paint historic towns nestled among coastal wetlands and sweeping farmlands. The week begins with the iconic “Meet the Artists” event where supporters and collectors mingle with artists on an exclusive waterfront estate. The week culminates with the Collectors Preview Party (July 22), a gallery sale open to all, Quick Draw (July 23), and Small Painting Sunday (July 24).

Paint Peggy’s Cove provides an opportunity for 42 artists to paint the beautiful maritime scenery in and around this iconic fishing village, known for its towering lighthouse. Artists display their work for sale in a large Mongolian Yurt erected in the heart of the village. Hundreds of residents and visitors visit the Yurt and the nearby children’s art tent during the event. A limited number of artists can register to display and sell previously completed works in addition to pieces completed on site.
