Jason Bouwman, plein air painting in the desert

We love to hear from the Plein Air Today community (join here)! The following is part of a series that spotlights an artist who loves painting outdoors. Today’s feature is on Jason Bouwman:

“My favorite place to paint is anywhere in the American Southwest, but especially in the high desert areas of Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful, the air is clear, and the light is unlike anything I’ve seen anywhere else. Perch me on a cliff, drive me down a red dirt road, or park me on the side of the highway and I’ll be in my happy place.”

“I paint in oils, which allow me to paint quickly and decisively, and create all kinds of interesting effects and textures.

“I focus on the landscape but I also paint man-made structures – specifically the faded, derelict, and abandoned. I’ve come to see the desert landscape as a metaphor for seasons of life. I’ve been working on a body of work called “Arabah,” which is an exploration of the mystical, metaphorical, and breathtaking beauty of desert places and of the possible blessings this landscape holds out for us.” ~Jason Bouwman
