Thomas Kegler, “Niagara, Psalms 84:11,” 2015, oil, 30 x 96 inches

On view now through January 21 at the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University is a remarkable display of Hudson River revival via Thomas Kegler.

“Painting Niagara: Thomas Kegler” is currently on view at the Castellani Art Museum and features the artist’s “Niagara, Psalms 84:11” — a monumental 30 x 96-inch masterpiece displaying the iconic falls. Also on view are 15 plein air paintings and related studies for the piece, along with works from the museum’s permanent holdings.

Via the museum website: “Excerpts from the most comprehensive instructional documentary video ever made on the landscape painting techniques of ‘indirect painting’ used by the old masters will also be included in the exhibition. This ground-breaking film presents the creation of ’Niagara, Psalms 84:11’ over a period of two years. Over 40 drawings and paintings laid the groundwork in preparation for this expansive work. ‘Niagara, Psalms 84:11’ endeavors to share the beauty of one of the world’s great natural wonders while evoking awareness and concern for the fragility of our natural environment.”
