Painting trips for artists - Russia with Eric Rhoads

Earlier this year Plein Air Publisher Eric Rhoads visited a Russian art colony as part of the planning for his Paint Russia Trip 2021. Enjoy this photo essay of his astounding painting trip into the very woods that were once painted by Levitan and Shiskin, and the house where Surov and Repin painted.

In Russia there are over 100 art schools. Once you get to the top after a minimum of six years of study, a select few get to study at the Surikov Institute for another six years, which develops their skills to the highest levels. This man, my old friend Nicholai Dubivik has devoted 30+ years of his life after graduating, and is now one of the top painting and drawing teachers in the world.

He will join my paintrussia.com painting trip in Fall 2021 to paint and coach anyone who wants some help. Not a formal MasterClass but help from a master. We’re also playing with the idea of a cultural exchange program where he will teach drawing and painting daily for five days at the institute.
