We asked Whiteside to share this thoughts on the top three winners of this cycle:
“I have to say that I was impressed by the overall quality of the almost 1,000 entries,” Whiteside said. “The winning painting, ‘Sunlit Pastures’ by Kyle Ma (shown at top), is a knockout piece. I understand that Kyle is a teenager? Are you kidding me! I love the composition and subject matter – this is a piece that I would own. There is a bright future for this young man in the art world indeed.”
“Timothy Horn’s painting, ‘Ride Again,’ is beautifully rendered, a nice touch with the light especially coming through the brim of her hat,” Whiteside said. “I have always been a fan of impressionism and this painting walks that line very nicely.”
“I really enjoyed the composition of Bob Upton’s ‘Easton Farm Life,’ and the Hopper vibe that you feel when viewing it,” Whiteside said. “I love architecture and especially when it is handled with a minimal presentation. Nice job Bob!”

About the PleinAir Salon:
PleinAir magazine presents the ninth annual PleinAir Salon Art Competition. In the spirit of the French Salon created by the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, this annual competition, with several cycles leading to annual Salon Grand Prize winners, is designed to stimulate artistic growth through competition. The competition rewards artists with $27,000 in cash prizes and exposure of their work, with the winning painting featured on the cover of PleinAir magazine.
It is our belief that cash prizes provide further inspiration and an avenue for artists to thrive and create new work by helping alleviate financial pressure.
Winners in each competition may receive recognition and exposure through PleinAir magazine’s print magazine, e-newsletter, and social media. Winners of each competition will also be entered into the annual competition.
