In Hudson, Wisconsin, along the banks of the St. Croix River, Plein Air Hudson recently held its third annual event. Who won awards?

More than 20 artists competed recently in the event, which drew collectors from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Kathie Wheeler served as judge.

“St. Croix Overlook,” by Christopher Copeland, 2016, oil, 11 x 14 in. Second Place

She chose Dan Mondloch’s watercolor “Morning Bite” as Best of Show. “It can be risky adding figures to plein air paintings,” says Mondloch, “much less putting them front and center. But the scene felt right and the two college students said they would stay for an hour or two, so it was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I like to fish, too, so we had a good, casual conversation that helped us all stay relaxed and in the moment.”

“A Study of a Fine Pine From Third & Vine,” by Dan Wiemer, 2016, watercolor and acrylic, 16 x 12 in. Third Place

Christopher Copeland’s piece “St. Croix Overlook” took Second Place, and Dan Wiemer’s “A Study of a Fine Pine From Third & Vine” won Third. Jeanette Richards won People’s Choice with “Historic Orange Street Home.”
