Kevin Barton: Kevin Barton discovered the idea of plein air painting from books about artists like Monet and Van Gogh, in his late teens, as he set out on the journey of his art career that spans 30 years as of 2026. To him, it feels somehow fitting he discovered this tradition in an old fashioned way. At the time he found that only a handful of artists in his area were painting impressionism on the spot like he had read about. So, plein air has been an integral part of his process from the beginning. It brings bold spontaneity, and not entirely paradoxically, decisiveness to the decision making. He feels there is a sense of being in the coveted now, or moment and more alive when working on location. And if anything he strives to bring more of this energy to his studio creations.

For Barton there is nothing better about being an artist than working outdoors during the summer after long Michigan winters. Spending the day painting at a farm is a day at the beach for him. As is traveling to various locales for interesting experiences.
