Now through November 30, “Sky Above | Earth Below,” a solo show of plein air paintings by New Mexico painter Jivan Lee, will be on view at Heinley Fine Arts in Taos.

“Morning Light on the Big Bend,” by Jivan Lee, 2014, oil, 48 x 72 in.

Nearly 40 pieces comprise the exhibition, which follows up on Lee’s sold-out 2013 show at the gallery. “This year’s show features pieces that dive deeper into the parallel potentials of paint as abstract, textural, colorful raw material and as vehicle for recognizable image,” says Lee. “The pieces pay homage to the power and gravity of Northern New Mexico’s weather, structures, and land — while also exploring the dynamic, entrancing rhythms that arise from a process that is as much about the material as the subject.”

“Sky Above, Earth Below,” by Jivan Lee, 2014, oil, 24 x 48 in.

“Revival,” by Jivan Lee, 2014, oil, 40 x 60 in.

Lee is known for thick application of paint on large canvases, as discussed in a previous piece on OutdoorPainter.com. For more information, visit the gallery’s website.
