Stuart Roper: Driving along, with no idea of what I’ll paint, really puts me in the mode of explorer, open to whatever reaches out and grabs my eye. “In The Cool Of The Morning” was just such a subject. The morning was so calm, perfumed by the spring air and just catching the early rays of light, which I always find irresistible. As I was finishing up this piece, a group of curious cows came by to get a drink. I probably would have thrown one in just for fun had their arrival been sooner! Painting en plein air is more that just visual, the sounds, smells or the serendipitous passerby, human or animal, can truly animate the experience.
I’m currently a signature member of the American Impressionist Society, associate member in the following; the Oil Painters of America, the International Plein Air Painters and the Outdoor Painters Society, and a former member of the Western North Carolina Plein Air Painters and the Plein Air Painters of the South East. These organizations have given me the opportunity to participate in numerous plein air events and exhibitions. The camaraderie as well as friendships developed has enriched my life immeasurably. My work has been included in many local and national exhibitions and the recipient of numerous awards and honors, all of which fills me with sincere gratitude.
