We love to hear from the Plein Air Today community! The following is part of a series that spotlights plein air painters who love adventure.

Today’s feature is from Angel Walthour:

One August, my two older sisters and I went on a family trip with our husbands to Creede, Colorado. We went to a nearby ranger station to ask for places to do some plein air painting. She told us of a lovely waterfall to get to at South Clear Creek Trail, which she assured us was an “easy” trail.

South Clear Creek Trail

So we eagerly gathered all our painting gear and made our way, slowly, down the trail. My oldest sister decided to stop halfway down. (She’s the smart one!) We enjoyed our time painting and slowly made our way back up the trail. We quickly found out that it was much harder getting out! We struggled for the longest time to get back up but we were losing steam. Our husbands were off fishing miles away so they would be no help to us.

We were barely halfway up the trail, sitting, trying to catch our breath when an angel appeared! She was a frequent visitor to the trail. She immediately made multiple trips back and forth to get all of our gear and then made sure each of us made it back up to our car!!! We learned many lessons from the experience. The biggest lesson was, the word “easy” is subjective!
