A Pastel Live Spotlight: Terri Ford (Beginner’s Day)

On a trip this spring to Central California I was so thrilled with the gorgeous skies that presented themselves. It was two days between storm and rain so the clouds were magnificent. I had gone to paint and take photos of the area for an exhibit, “Impressions of the Middle Kingdom.”

The area around Paso Robles where I stayed is dotted with agriculture, tractors, old feed and grain buildings, small towns, barns, sheds, outbuildings, and such – which I really like to paint. Rural funk and fabulous skies were a great painting inspiration to me.

It’s a thrill to serve on the faculty for Beginner’s Day at Pastel Live. I will share my approach to drawing…in particular drawing as a stepping stone to a pastel painting. It was my love of drawing as a young artist that attracted me to pastels in the first place and I still rely on a comprehensive drawing when starting my pastel paintings.
