This week’s PleinAir Podcast guest is landscape painter Richard McKinley (PSA-MP & HFH, PSWC-PL). He tells us to ask ourselves, “why am I painting,” and then to relax and not necessarily worry about the answer, but instead to focus on the simple pleasures of creating art. He explains how art “is a visual vocabulary of trying to make a connection with another living soul.”

• Why there’s more to art than creating a good product, and the importance of finding something beautiful in the mundane
Concerning induction into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame, McKinley says, “I am humbled to be in such company, and grateful to my mentors for the opportunities that have come my way. Every blank surface provides the same intimidation and every day spent painting, a new challenge. My goal is to capture a piece of the spontaneous dance of light across the palette of nature. One way of painting that I sometimes do results
in a work quite independent of the given scene yet inspired by just being in the outdoors,away from the confinement of the studio. I don’t know if this unique to me but it has resulted in a number of unique paintings I would like to share.
