Landscape painting by Richard McKinley, guest on the PleinAir Podcast
“Ozark Afternoon” (9 x 12 in.), a pastel landscape painting by Richard McKinley, featured in the PleinAir Podcast with Eric Rhoads, Episode 105

This week’s PleinAir Podcast guest is landscape painter Richard McKinley (PSA-MP & HFH, PSWC-PL). He tells us to ask ourselves, “why am I painting,” and then to relax and not necessarily worry about the answer, but instead to focus on the simple pleasures of creating art. He explains how art “is a visual vocabulary of trying to make a connection with another living soul.”

Listen as McKinley shares the following:
• Why sometimes the longer we paint, the harder it becomes
• Advice for painting for oneself versus painting for galleries and collectors
• Why there’s more to art than creating a good product, and the importance of finding something beautiful in the mundane

Concerning induction into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame, McKinley says, “I am humbled to be in such company, and grateful to my mentors for the opportunities that have come my way. Every blank surface provides the same intimidation and every day spent painting, a new challenge. My goal is to capture a piece of the spontaneous dance of light across the palette of nature. I hope my pieces are like a glance when we see something that makes us linger for a moment.” (from mckinleystudio.com)

Bonus: This week’s PleinAir Podcast includes a Marketing Minute!
You’ll learn:
• What to do if your chosen medium (or subject) is “taboo” for most galleries and collectors
• Why galleries don’t provide the name of buyers to the artists and why you should address this upfront in your initial agreement

  1. One way of painting that I sometimes do results
in a work quite independent of the given scene yet inspired by just being in the outdoors, away from the confinement of the studio. I don’t know if this unique to me but it has resulted in a number of unique paintings I would like to share.

  2. Love this artist (Richard McKinley) and his philosophy and of course, his work. Thanks so much for doing these interviews. It is such a helpful and inspiring process. Love your Plean Air Magazine also. Looking forward to painting with some of you in June at the invitational in up-state NY.
