What is the most interesting thing you have painted/sculpted and why?
Sherry Mason: When Dr. Priya Chokshi approached me to do a commission, her love for Bryson City was so heartfelt, it immediately sparked my own inspiration. She envisioned a panoramic painting that celebrated the town’s most cherished landmarks—a tribute to a place that meant so much to her. To do it justice, my husband Joe and I traveled there to experience the spirit of the landscape firsthand and gather reference material.
The resulting work became one of the most ambitious pieces I’ve created. Spanning seven feet, the composition is made up of three individual paintings—a 24” x 48” centerpiece flanked by two 24” x 18” panels. Each can stand alone, yet together they offer a sweeping view that captures the emotional and physical heart of Bryson City.
Though painted in the studio, the piece is rooted in plein air values—observation, atmosphere, and connection to place.
How do you describe success?
Sherry Mason: For me, success as an artist isn’t just about scale or technique. It’s when a collector’s personal vision and my creative voice come together in a way that feels both true and lasting.
