Artist Joseph McGurl won the PleinAir Magazine Award in the 2012-2013 Art Renewal Center Salon for his painting “Twilight From the Palisades.” The award includes a feature story in the print edition of PleinAir magazine.

McGurl works en plein air and also executes numerous studies in preparation for his studio paintings. He spends much of his summers on his boat “Atelier” with his family along the New England coast, often painting from its decks. McGurl also won the $42,000 Purchase Prize and 1st Place in the Landscape category of the competition.

“Awards like the ARC Salon are all about raising the level of quality through competition as women and men strive to be their best,” said B. Eric Rhoads, publisher of PleinAir magazine. “We’re honored to play a role with our annual PleinAir Magazine Award, and I was personally honored to be selected as one of the judges in this year’s competition.”

  1. What a wonderful peek at “Time Past”! This exhibit, as do many others like it, exemplifies the valuable role that art plays in capturing and preserving beauty; not only for contemporary populations, but also — and perhaps more importantly — for future generations! ‘Tis no wonder, then, that artistic impulses beat so long and strong in our hearts; for it would appear that these impulses, along with our varied yet not-unconnected responses to them, comprise an emotional link that binds us all across time and space, keeping hope alive!
