Most plein air events don’t differentiate among media, or they show a bias toward oils. Not so in Mendocino, California. The Medocino Open Paint Out gave awards to the following artists in the media listed below.
“In the Mood,” by Macario Pascual, 2013, oil. Best of Show
In the Oil category, Susan Elwart Hall took First Place for her painting “Sunny Solitude.” Sally Cataldo won the First Place prize in Watercolor for her “Cypress Cove Friday.” In Pastel, Francine Hurd won the top prize with “On the River.” And in Acrylic, First Place went to Lorraine Filippone for a painting also called “Cypress Cove Friday.”

Best of Show was won by Macario Pascual for “In the Mood,” and the Quick Draw was won by Rolando Barrero. More than 70 artists participated in the event, which was held September 9 through 14. The event, which was sponsored in part by PleinAir magazine, offered more than $5,000 in prizes.

“It was a wonderful time, weather good and lots of vistas to paint — ocean, fishing village, quaint houses, and the like,” says participant Donna DeLaBriandais. “The Mendocino Art Center gave us wall space to exhibit paintings, with awards on the last day after the quick draw on Main Street.”
