Randy Smith will reassure you that the only thing you need for an interesting painting is good light conditions.

Smith recently painted a white wall with a small, innocuous light mounted on one side and the shadow of a colorful tree on the other. He found this at the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá in San Diego. “On a rainy day with only brief moments of sunshine, I decided to look for a simple subject that I could capture quickly,” he says. “I was captivated by the bright, warm wall covered with cool, rich shadows.”
