Forget the old question about whether it rains in Southern California. Does it snow? Terry d. Chacon is here to tell you “yes,” and she has the plein air painting to prove it.

The Redlands, California, artist heard that snow was on the ground in the hills beyond her town. She sought it out, braved the cool temperatures, and painted it.
“I can remember a dusting a couple of times in the last 29 years in this area,” she says. “Oak Glen, where I painted this, does get snow. It’s at a higher altitude, but because of the drought, not much has fallen over the past five years. Big Bear and Running Springs, which have a couple of ski resorts, have been making their own snow the past few years. We are very happy to have a lot of snow this year, and I will be taking advantage of being able to paint snow closer to where I live.”
