On February 12, the San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) partnered with the San Diego Museum of Art and Oak Park Elementary to launch a multi-week plein air program serving 70 fourth-grade students.

The series introduced students to the plein air tradition through brief art history lessons, live artist demonstrations, and hands-on outdoor painting sessions, culminating in a docent-led museum visit and a student paint-out in Balboa Park.

This educational initiative reflects SDWS’s broader commitment to supporting plein air enthusiasts, including hosting its annual Plein Air Show each summer. Made possible by a generous grant from the Gerald T. & Inez Grant Parker Foundation, the program brought the timeless practice of painting outdoors to the next generation of artists.

  1. Hello, I’d like to get started in painting outside. I am very interested in knowing what type of easels the fourth grade are using. I have been looking them up and see they are very expensive and I am looking for a less expensive way to go since I would be a beginner. I appreciate any information you can pass along.I purchased a wooden fold up one at a yard sale, but it is 25 pounds and very difficult to put up. Would like an easier option and a lighter option.
