How did you get started and then develop your career?
Kathryn Noel: My kickstart into painting began with an empty wall. It was long and bare and it was screaming for artwork. We had just moved into our starter home and I knew art was very low on the budget list.

So, I got out my watercolors, some paper and a brush, and went to work. I took these watercolor paintings into the local framing shop and sheepishly handed them to the man behind the counter. He didn’t say much, just showed me some matting and frames. Later that week, I got a phone call from the shop and a woman said she would like me to come in to talk. I thought, oh man, she’s going to tell me they aren’t worthy of frames, but to my surprise she wanted me to show them in their gallery! That day my life changed for the better.

My first medium was watercolor, and it still holds a magical thrill, but then oils beckoned. I’m at a place now where composition drives the decision as to the medium and method I use. Be it brush or palette knife, watercolor or oil, plein air or studio, painting is my passion.
