How did you get started and then develop your career?
Michael Gault: I can’t remember NOT wanting to be an artist. I didn’t always know what it was called, but I wanted to make things and be creative. I was a radioman in the Navy during the Vietnam and was offered a full ride to the U.S. Naval Academy. where I could be an officer with a career. I said no, I wanted to be an artist and when my service was complete, I applied to the Kansas City Art Institute where I learned and improved my skills, not only to paint and draw, but to think like an artist. I pursued plein air painting and received my BFA. and my MA from the University of Missouri-Kansas.
The creative journey is my career – even when teaching college I was painting and developing my ability to see and create good art. I experimented with different genres and realized a true artist can do anything. My abstract and non-representative pieces feed my ability to create great plein air or studio landscapes. My abilities to “think” like an artist have expanded my vision of what a great painting should be while allowing me to invite a viewer into my visions through paint.
