How do you describe success?
Nancy Tankersley: For me, success is being able to express myself in a visual language that enables me to share my connection to a scene with others. We have many ways to do that as artists, but if we don’t have command of those tools, often our efforts miss the mark. When we succeed, we have created a means to communicate where spoken language often fails. Of course, success can be measured in dollars earned, and it’s always been important to me to know that others appreciate my work by the purchase of a painting.
How do you find inspiration?
Nancy Tankersley: When I was just starting out as an artist, I felt that my efforts should show some universal truth or make a political statement about the failings in our society. But I didn’t have the tools to do that. So I turned inward, spent years refining my abilities, and concentrated on the world in which I was immersed, that of family and relationships.. As I grew older, my world enlarged as did my repertoire of visual tools. Now, there are more ideas than I can possibly capture in my remaining years!
