Artist Buffalo Kaplinski judged the Colorado Mountain Plein Air Festival that took place from September 15-22, 2012 in Salida, Colorado. Find out who received prizes from this legendary artist.

Buffalo Kaplinski has been a plein air painter for more than 40 years and has carried his watercolors and acrylic paints to more than 25 countries. He recently judged the Colorado Mountain Plein Air Festival in Salida, Colorado, and awarded the Best of Show prize to Ken Hartman. Nora Larimer, president of the Chaffee County Council on the Arts, placed second, and Marsha Ownes earned third place. Carl Bork and Tom Lockhart received Honorable Mentions. The People’s Choice award went to Laura Barton, and Lorie Merfeld-Batson received an Award of Excellence.

Each artist could enter three works to be judged in the competition, and about 50 people attended to view some of the pieces painted in the area during the festival. The event began September 15, with Paint Salida Day, during which artists painted local scenes, and the festival continued through the week as artists painted within Chaffee and Fremont Counties.
