I always wondered why artists painted a series when there were tens of thousands of themes one could explore – until I grew some nigella flowers.

I marveled at the flowers and leaves, and how different the flowers were, especially at the center. The flowers themselves were of delicate colors and shapes.

It was my turn to explore the mystery of this one flower, painting and drawing it from life at least five times this year … I am not done yet.

  1. I enjoy painting waves. There are never the same two alike. You can paint the same reference photo using different combinations of blues, yellows, greens and reds (and white, of course) and they will all look quite different. I also paint it in different mediums–watercolor, gouache, oil pastel, acrylic and oil–again they all come out totally different. I don’t think I would ever get bored with painting waves.
