When the Plein Air Convention and Expo was cancelled due to Covid-19, our team knew there had to be a way to still gather with our tribe and so we held Plein Air Live, the first global virtual art conference.
In addition to the live painting demonstrations by contemporary favorites, roundtable discussions about art, and mini Zoom rooms for networking, we had a nightly Happy Hour Paint Along session. During the Happy Hour, artists could watch a live stream of a beautiful view and paint it together as we shared plein air stories, laughed, and continued to celebrate art.
On Day 1 the live stream paint-along was of a Newfoundland iceberg, giving many artists a chance to paint a subject they’ve not yet seen in person. In this round-up, you can enjoy 45 of the iceberg paintings created from the scene – take in the variety of interpretations here, and join us for the next virtual art conference in October 2020, Realism Live.
See more of everyone’s experiences of Plein Air Live on Instagram when you check out the hashtag #pleinairlive, and be sure to join us for Realism Live in October – you won’t want to miss it!
It was a nice surprise to see my “Tip of It” posted on Plein Air Today … and to see all the rest of the pieces. During the shutdown early on, I was searching for all sorts of webcams that would give me a little bit of that sense of life all of us plein air painters crave. Traveling multiple places during Plein Air Live … on those webcams was wonderful. Great idea!
I’m going to set up one for myself capturing the chicken coop at a friend’s farm. Have also painted from the San Diego Zoo’s webcams in their site’s kids section. It’s definitely a time that creativity reigns.
With the extended playback, I’ll also be finishing up two more pieces from the webcams — one of the conservatory and the Golden Gate bridge.
You need to make a hashtag for these kind of painting challenges on instagram – then we can give them love!
It’s always so fascinating to see how different the paintings can be, even though all the artists are painting the same subject.
This was so fun to see how so many paintings were so different of One view.
