Peninsula School of Art’s 2018 Door County Plein Air Festival Award Winners Announced
From a field of 39 nationally recognized outdoor painters, Jill Basham from Maryland was awarded Best in Show at the Door County Plein Air Festival for her oil painting “Plateau Road View.” The winners of the 2018 invitational event presented by Peninsula School of Art were announced at the Festival’s Gala Auction event on Saturday, July 28.
According to 2018 festival judge, artist CW Mundy, “This is by far the best plein air competition that I’ve seen, and thus it was very difficult for me. All works were judged based on the foundational truths of the science of painting — drawing, design, value, color, edges, paint manipulation, with variety and unity in each of those disciplines. All works were also judged with a very subjective emotional and personal viewpoint. My subjective viewpoint is based on my initial emotional response at first glance. My choice for best of show represents the entire body of works, in the classical plein air spirit.”
Other top awards at the festival included:
First Place to Charlie Hunter (Vermont) for “Alis Chalmers”
Second Place to John Lasater (Arkansas) for “Fire on the Water”
and Third Place to James Richards (Georgia) for “Nocturne Sentinel.”

Honorable Mention recognition was claimed by both Terry Miura (California) for “Susan at Rest” and Carl Bretzke (Minnesota) for “Ephraim Whitecap.”

In addition, judge CW Mundy and his wife, Rebecca, sponsored a Judges Award for Best Creative Statement, which was awarded to Shar Coulson (Illinois) for “Beachy Bay – Baileys Harbor.”
