Sunset and Rain won the “Enchanted Sky Award” in the PAPNM 12th National Juried Members Exhibition.

Growing up by the ocean in Connecticut, Silvia claims her first visual memory was the horizon line and first art influence the marine paintings of New England. Throughout her career as a painter, Silvia has explored landscape subjects, seeking to represent not only the physical features of the earth but the ephemeral qualities of skies, light, and weather. Now inspired by the vastness of New Mexico’s horizon and dramatic skies, Silvia seeks to share with the viewer an intense and personal expression.

“The subject of landscape is complex, and engages my interest throughout a range of aesthetic and spiritual concerns. Honoring the beauty of nature in a painting is a meditation, a poem, and a gift to the viewer. Painting on location is the most immediate and intimate experience with one’s chosen subject, trying to capture the light, record observations quickly, and preserve the feeling of attraction one felt for the location.” Silvia’s plein air sketches are fundamental to recording nature’s dynamism, and often serving as a basis for larger paintings in the studio. She is devoted to the pastel medium for its versatility and intense pigmentation.

Silvia has exhibited extensively in the USA and Japan, and has been recognized with numerous awards. Professional memberships include American Society of Marine Artists, Signature status in the Pastel Society of America, Distinguished Pastelist in Pastel Society of New Mexico, Master Circle in International Association of Pastel Societies, and Signature status in Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, where she has served in the past as President. In recent years Silvia has been awarded Artist in Residence grants at Acadia National Park, Aztec Ruins National Monument, and Cape Cod National Seashore.
