  1. Zion NP is an outdoor painter’s dream come true! I’ve enjoyed three artist’s residencies with the National Park Service and can quite honestly say that my time as Zion NP A-i-R (mid-Oct. to mid-Nov. 2015) was undoubtedly the most productive to date. During my stay I managed to fill 2 field journals & 2 sketchbooks, and produce over 70 compositional sketches & 20+ color studies.

The contrasting warm hues of the Navajo sandstone cliffs and cool hues of the vegetation, sky and Virgin River provide amazing subjects at every turn. And the canyon’s north-south orientation mean that lighting effects are dramatic and constantly changing from sunrise to sunset (with additional, equally amazing subjects to paint being offered during the full moon.)

If you apply and are one of the very fortunate artists selected save your car for driving into Springdale for provisions and exploring Kolob Canyon. For exploring the Scenic Drive arrange with the A-i-R Coordinator to borrow one of the Park’s “Green Bikes”; then take the free shuttle to the top of the canyon (there’s a bike rack on the front of the shuttle) and coast back down canyon — stopping as often as the scenery beckons. Be sure and repeat the ride at different times of day for dramatically different lighting effects. (Tip: the Green Bikes are equipped with two wire baskets on the rear that are perfect for carrying your pochade box, camera, sketching gear, and drinking water.)

The “cost” for participating? Two brief public presentations during your stay and donation of one of your works to the park’s permanent collection (where it will be in very prestigious company.)
