Duluth, Minnesota, was the destination for 40 artists recently for Plein Air Duluth: Paint Du Nord, a plein air competition hosted by the Duluth Art Institute. Who won?
 
The event in this famously Nordic area was won by Arna Rennan, an artist who had just returned to her native Minnesota after spending 13 years painting in Norway. She earned $750 for her First Place painting, “Evening, 5th Avenue West.”
 
The second-richest award was the Depot Award, which was won by Lisa Stauffer for “All Tied Up.”

Second Place at Paint Du Nord was won by Richard Abraham for “Railyard Vista,” and Third went to Matt Kania for “Happy Duluth Day.” The award for Best Sense of Place went to Mary Pettis for “Chester’s View.” Ed Cacek, Lee Englund, Laura Frykman, Angie Malin, and Steve Wysocki won Honorable Mention. Frykman also won People’s Choice.
 
David Gilsvik won the Quick Draw with “Into the Light,” with Greg Lecker, Adam Swanson, and Michelle Wegler earning Honorable Mention.
