A Painting Trip of a Lifetime

After months of planning, PleinAir Magazine Publisher Eric Rhoads is leading a large group of artists to paint throughout the north and south islands of New Zealand. He leaves on Monday with his wife, Laurie, to meet fellow painters for what one has said is “a bucket list dream come true.”

The trip is a replacement for an originally planned trip to Russia, which could not occur because of the Ukraine conflict. In New Zealand, the group will visit extraordinarily beautiful locations daily with plenty of painting time. At one point, they’ll even travel by plane to Milford Sound, stay overnight on a boat and enjoy an elegant way to paint the area with a unique viewpoint.

While most of us are coasting into the Fall season, those in New Zealand will be experiencing Spring, with loads of flowers, greenery, and crisp mid-60 degree temps.

The artists also have the benefit of a private Facebook group for asking questions about traveling with art gear, as well as sharing photos and memories with each other. There, Eric shared this tip: Going on a painting retreat like this is not the time to try something new when it comes to painting; instead, bring the materials you’re used to working with.

While it might be too late to hop on a plane and head to NZ now, you can make plans to join Eric for the next U.S. Publisher’s Invitational or international art trip! Follow him on Instagram and Facebook, and visit publishersinvitational.com to see what’s next.
