Although the snowy egret in this photo seems to be casting a critical eye on Neil Walling‘s painting, closer inspection implies the water bird was instead casing the depicted scene as a nice place to live.
The egret seems to be pondering the next brushstroke.
“This was taken at Bowditch Park on Fort Myers Beach, Florida,” says Walling. “I was about two-thirds done with the painting when the bird arrived.”
