plein air painting in snow

We love to hear from the Plein Air Today community! The following is part of a series that spotlights an artist who loves painting outdoors. Today’s feature is on Zarin Tazreen.

What’s your favorite place to paint, and why?
I like to explore all the parks my city offers and plein air sessions give me the perfect reason to do that! Painting long stretches of land helps me to assess my composition carefully, and on weekends, when parks get quite busy, putting tiny people in your
painting makes for an interesting scene!

What’s your #1 choice of media, and why?
Although acrylics are dominating my plein air works right now, nothing can beat the loose and vigorous stroke of pastels. I had always loved the vibrancy of pastels and how quickly you can use this medium to get work done en plein air.

What’s your favorite subject to paint, and why?
During winter, I fell in love with painting snow. As an international student from South Asia, I had always been exposed to sunny, tropical climates; it felt odd painting snow because I couldn’t “feel” the subject. Ever since coming to Canada, snow is plenty here! What makes it so interesting is it isn’t purely white – hints of pinks, purples, and yellows here and there – the challenge is what it makes a great subject.
