In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran 2012, the fourth annual plein air event in Zion National Park,  was held November 4-12, 2012. Twenty-five of the country’s top landscape painters participated, and several received purchase awards.

Celebrating the iconic artist Thomas Moran’s (1837-1926) place in the history of Zion Canyon, the Zion National Park Foundation hosted the fourth annual In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran Plein Air Art Invitational. The event brought together 25 of the country’s finest landscape artists to paint in the places Moran sketched in Zion Canyon.

This year the Master Artists included William Scott Jennings, P.A. Nisbet, and Kate Starling. Artists invited to participate in the weeklong event included Mark Bangerter, Joshua Been, Arlene Braithwaite, John D. Cogan, Bill Cramer, Linda Dellandre, Cody DeLong, Linda Glover Gooch, Damien Gonzales, George Handrahan, Brad Holt, Donal Jolley, Becky Joy, Buffalo Kaplinski, David Koch, Mike Kowalski, Roland Lee, Gloria Miller Allen, Michael Obermeyer, Dave A. Santillanes, Kathleen Strukoff, and Anne Weiler-Brown.

Roland Lee won the People’s Choice award, Dave A. Santillanes won a purchase award, and John D. Cogan won a record four awards in the invitational event. Proceeds from the event go to the Zion National Park Foundation and support important projects in the park. This year, funds raised will support Zion’s ongoing “Art in the Park” programs and the park’s Youth Education Initiative, making it possible for children throughout the area to visit the park and have a potentially life-changing educational experience.
