First Bales of Spring
9 x 12 in.
Oil

This piece was painted on location on an acreage just north of Council Bluffs, Iowa. I have painted here a number of times but never from this particular angle. I really loved the naturally occurring composition with the arrangement of the hay bales, the soft variations in the color of the ground, the shadows on the barn…a very peaceful scene typically of this part of the country.

Debra’s ability to render emotion, mood and to capture the spirit of her subjects draws collectors worldwide to her work.

“Painting is such a spiritual experience for me. Nothing inspires me more than being out on location, capturing the subtle nuances of color, light and atmosphere that can only be achieved by painting from nature. When I find a subject that triggers a strong emotional response in me, I know that’s what I have to paint. My greatest satisfaction is when the viewer has that same emotional response I did.”

Debra is also well known for her portrait work. Her most visible portrait commission to date hangs at Omaha’s Holland Performing Arts Center – a 4 x 6 foot portrait of Richard and Mary Holland, commissioned by Omaha Performing Arts.

Debra has participated in countless juried and invitational exhibitions across the country. She is a frequent speaker and demo artist at schools, art and community events, and radio blog talk shows. She served on the faculty of the Plein Air Convention in 2014, 2015, 2018 and will once again in 2020. Debra’s work has been featured in several national art publications.
