Plein air painting setup
Sue Barrasi painted the scene entirely without brushes

“Whenever space opens in my crazy schedule, I grab my materials and head outside to paint for a few hours,” says Sue Barrasi. “On this occasion, I drove to a charming site I’d filed away in my memory for when the time was right.

“Despite the early hour, the heat and humidity were already mounting an offensive. I sketched the scene, then reached into my backpack for my brushes, anxious to get engrossed in my creamy oils. As I dug around, a horrible realization washed over me — I’d left my recently washed brushes at home on my dining room table.

“Swatting away a mosquito, I took a deep breath, pushing down the beginnings of a sob. Desperate not to lose this precious painting opportunity, I looked around and spotted some twigs with small leaves, approximately the size of my brushes. I thanked Nature for providing these tools, and accepted the challenge to paint with them. Time can be an ally or a foe, and on that hill, on that sunny afternoon, I refused to surrender!”
