Participants will paint from the perspective of a boat through BaySail’s plein air program.

There are many ways one could introduce children and adults to the joys of painting outdoors. A Michigan nonprofit organization is offering a particularly striking way: from the deck of a tall ship.

BaySail, of Bay City, Michigan, is teaming up with Saginaw Valley State University and Studio 23/The Arts Center to offer three-hour trips on the schooner Appledore IV this summer. The trips will cost only $25 per person, thanks to a mini-grant BaySail secured from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

The schooner will keep sailing, so the participants will need to work quickly. “There’s not a lot of time, and it’s windy, so they will finish their pieces in Studio 23,” explains Gregory Allington, the director of education at BaySail.

An instructor from Saginaw Valley State University’s Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum will be on hand to help participants. Currently there are four trips planned on Wednesdays in the summer — July 23, and August 13, 20, and 27. For more information, visit BaySail’s website or call 989.895.5193.
