Cindy Briggs: There is a connection between my love of painting “old world” stone cathedrals found throughout Europe and the natural stone cathedrals of Zion National Park, a few hours from my home in Utah. Both subjects are soul-inspiring. I’m drawn to the spires pointing toward heaven, transitioning patterns of light and shadows, and the dramatic relationships of unique shapes and colors.

As an artist who travels to paint, I fill my sketchbooks with watercolor studies to record my point of view and capture the essence of a variety of subjects. I painted a small version of this majestic scene, “Ascending Zion,” en plein air as a study.

Back in the studio, working from my study and reference photos, I created this larger painting, finessed the relationships, experimented with color, and captured dramatic sunlight with my paintbrush.

Ascending Zion” is currently featured in the Northwest Watercolor Society 2021 Members Show and is available for purchase. The plein air study was sold in the High Desert Museum Rendezvous Show in 2020.

Inspired by generations of artists in my family, I continue on this creative path with gratitude for their mentoring and enjoy sharing the journey with my students. Teaching regionally and internationally for over 35 years, I have an expanding selection of in-depth watercolor workshop and program offerings. My newest program, “All About Watercolors” online membership program is opening soon.
