The Leelanau Peninsula, Michigan

“The Leelanau Peninsula is an incredible place to live and paint in Michigan,” says Barbara Reich. “There are many beautiful apple orchards dotting the countryside. We also have top-notch cideries. As soon as I pulled into Tandem Ciders, I knew I had to paint there. The outside garden area was at its peak, set against a white barn-like building. The yellow shade sail and building trim added a pop of color, and strengthened the overall design. I felt energized by the setting and I remember how much fun I had painting with friends that day…plus I got to sample the local apples.

“Later, ‘Tasting Room Garden,’ was recognized at a Great lakes Pastel Society show, and as a result, I was awarded the first ever GLPS Master Pastelist designation. Needless to say, this inspiring spot is on my must return list each year!”

Glacier National Park

“I am blessed to live just thirty minutes from Glacier National Park,” says Plein Air Today reader Therese Ely. “My favorite subject and challenge is painting rocks and water, which the park is full of! Both interact … water shapes the rocks as rocks direct the course of the water. I paint in oils, as the medium gives solidity to a rock but still allows for delicate glazing.”

Hawaii

“I travel often and paint around the world, but one of my favorite experiences so far was in Hawaii,” says Plein Air Today reader Margo Levvy. “It is truly an outstanding place for plein air painting. That day, I hadn’t planned to paint, but I couldn’t resist the beauty of the spot I discovered. It was hot, but I found a huge, beautiful tree that gave me shade and a perfect view. The setting was so peaceful, filled with the gentle melody of Hawaiian birdsong.

“For me, nothing compares to painting outdoors, surrounded by nature, birds singing, fresh air, and the warmth of humidity on the skin. It’s the purest joy of being a painter.”
